The only college in the Northern Marianas has recorded an uptick in student enrolment for the new school year despite all but two of its buildings being destroyed by Super Typhoon Yutu.

The Northern Marianas College said it currently has 1,276 students enrolled this semester, a 12 percent increase from last year.

The college lost 37 of its 39 classrooms, its cafeteria, bookstore, and other facilities when the Category 5 typhoon struck Saipan and neighbouring Tinian last October.

That forced the college to hold its classes in temporary tents erected by the US Army Corps of Engineers, which was contracted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency through the Public Assistance Programme.
