There are 8730 new cases of Covid-19 today, and 808 hospitalisations, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says.
It is the second day of the new approach to reporting Covid-19 deaths as either the underlying cause or a contributing factor. A total 1427 deaths are confirmed as attributable in either category, Dr Bloomfield says in today's Covid-19 media conference.
The seven-day rolling average of attributable deaths is 17.
Bloomfield says case rates are trending downward across all four main regions in New Zealand. This is supported by wastewater results and test positivity for people being admitted to hospital.
The case rate from reported test results decreased by about 12 percent compared to the previous week.
There are also 394 Covid-19 cases reported at the border today.
In an update on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said the seven-day rolling average of Covid-19 community case numbers was 8335.
Meanwhile, students from Otago Polytechnic nursing school were called in to cover 27 hospital aide shifts at Dunedin Hospital over the weekend.
The Nurses Organisation union is asking how many hospitals are using unqualified student nurses to fill roster gaps.
