The body of a Māui or Hector's dolphin has been found washed up on an Auckland beach.
A member of the public reported the carcass on Āwhitu Peninsula on Wednesday.
The dolphin was collected by Department of Conservation staff with local iwi assisting.
It will now be sent to Massey University to try to determine the cause of death.
Māui dolphins are critically endangered, with between 48 and 64 left, while Hector's dolphins number about 1500.
