Two people were injured in the central city shooting and had been in a serious condition in ICU, but police said they have now been moved onto wards and are both stable.

A 29-year-old man arrested in Flaxmere last night will appear in Hastings District Court today on an unlawful possession of a firearms charge, and three charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said officers were also interviewing two women who are associates of the man.

"I would also like to reiterate that while some of those involved in this incident have gang links, we do not believe this incident is part of an ongoing gang conflict or that there is any increased risk to the public," Leitch said in a statement.

Earlier, police arrested an 18-year-old Porirua man, who is charged with common assault over an incident immediately prior to the shooting.

He will appear in Wellington District Court on 12 May.

On 29 April, a 21-year-old man appeared in the Porirua District Court charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm and three charges of being a party to wounding with intent.
