Ann Pobutsky, of Guam's Department of Public Health and Social Services, said travellers should protect themselves by applying mosquito repellents that contain 20 percent to 30 percent DEET.

"There is no evidence that dengue is being spread on Guam," Ms Pobutsky told the Daily News.

"Imported cases of the disease are occasionally reported in residents or visitors who have become infected while in another country."

Ms Pobutsky said the department is also aware of recent dengue outbreaks in Palau, Nauru and New Caledonia.
