A bill proposed to stop a salary increase of elected officials in the Northern Marianas may have hit a roadblock.

The legal counsel of the House of Representatives John Cool says the measure to remove salary increases of elected officials was deemed unconstitutional.
He says under the CNMI constitution, salaries of elected members of both the legislative branch and the executive branch may not be changed within four years.
The pay hike was approved a year ago.
Public Law 19-83 states that the governor and lieutenant governor would be compensated with a salary of $US120,000 and $100,000 per annum, respectively.
