Two in custody after firearm incident on Southern Motorway

Two people have been taken into custody after a firearm was spotted on an Auckland Motorway.

The police were notified of the incident on the Southern Motorway, near Epsom just after 5pm.

A witness told RNZ two cars were swerving round each other and one of the people in the vehicle pulled out a shotgun.

Inspector Jason Homan said the police located the vehicle, found the firearm and took two people into custody.

He said enquiries are ongoing and charges are being considered.

Inspector Homan said he wants to reassure the public that this type of incident is taken seriously.
