The House of Representatives has approved a wage hike of $US35,000 - up from $US85,000.
The governor himself had suggested lower levels of increase, which were not to take effect till after the next election, but the House has raised the remuneration levels for both the governor and his deputy and for them to apply immediately.
The House's version of the bill is now before the Senate.
