The New Zealand Transport Agency's new electronic tolling system was out of action during the weekend, leaving drivers unable to pay their road user charges online.

The website, which was updated to include the Tauranga Eastern Link and Takitimu Drive, was meant to be rolled out last Friday afternoon, but hasn't been working since.

NZTA doesn't know how many people have tried to access the website, but said the problem affected only casual toll road users, not those with an account.

Drivers can still pay by cash or by phone, and the agency has waived the administration fee for phone payments and extended the pay period from five to 19 days.

NZTA said it hopes the system will be back up and running this afternoon.
