Five young people broke out and onto the roof of a youth justice facility in Christchurch last night.

Oranga Tamariki's Rachel Leota said a staff member received minor injuries in the incident at Te Puna Wai ō Tuhinapo youth justice residence in Rolleston.

After nearly four hours, all five were brought down with police assistance just before midnight.

Police have charged one of the youths with assault and said charges against the four others were being considered.

Leota said Oranga Tamariki would be conducting a review into the matter.
