Covid-19 update: 24,068 new cases, 40 deaths and 344 in hospital reported in past week

There are 24,068 new cases of Covid-19 this week, says the Ministry of Health.

There are also a further 40 deaths being reported today, including a child under the age of 10.

Of the 40 deaths being reported today, seven were from the Auckland region, four were from Waikato, one was from Bay of Plenty, two were from Lakes, three were from Hawke's Bay, one was from Taranaki, two were from MidCentral, three were from Whanganui, four were from Wellington region, two were from Nelson Marlborough, nine were from Canterbury, two were from Southern.

One was less than 10 years old, one was in their 50s, five were in their 60s, eight were in their 70s, 15 were in their 80s and ten were aged over 90. Of these people, 18 were women and 22 were men.

The seven-day rolling average of community cases is 3434 - last Monday it was 3079. Of the new cases, 4874 are reinfections.

There were also 344 people in hospital as at midnight Sunday, including three cases in ICU.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 2182 deaths can be attributed to Covid-19.
