Qiliho to stay as acting Fiji police chief

13:55 pm on 10 February 2016

Fiji's acting police commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho will reportedly continue in the role for another three months.

The Fiji Sun reports that this has been disclosed by the Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who is also in charge of the body making the appointment, the Constitutional Offices Commission.

Mr Bainaimarama said he had given his endorsement for the acting commissioner to stay on for another three months as his tenure was to expire tomorrow.

The Constitutional Offices Commission had declined to say how many people have applied for the position.

Earlier, Brigadier General Qiliho confirmed that he applied but said he would be happy to return to the military barracks, if he failed to get the job.

He was made the acting police commissioner by Mr Bainimarama in November after Ben Groenewald resigned, citing military interference in the work of the police.

Mr Groenewald was the only non-military person to lead the Fiji police since Mr Bainimarama seized power in the 2006 military coup.
