James Taom will take up the role after the former Justice Minister Natan Teewe resigned earlier this month in a disagreement with the government.

Mr Taom was a government backbencher and represents the northern island of Makin.

Meanwhile, the Opposition is seeking a High Court order for a special sitting of Parliament so it can move a motion of no confidence against the president.
