A makeover for Wellington's outdated Johnsonville Mall is back on the cards after decades of stops and starts.
Property owner Stride Property is working with the Wellington Council and key tenants on a multi-use redevelopment of the mall.
A number of resource consents for redevelopment of the mall were issued over the past few decades, but significant changes are yet to be made, with the lack of action drawing significant criticism from community and council over the years.
"We've had quite a significant revisit of that opportunity, looking at more of a mixed-use style development," Stride Property chief executive Philip Littlewood said.
He said the company was in the pre-development phase.
"Perhaps not (office) towers, but certainly I think a sympathetic development to its environment," he said, adding it would include other forms of accommodation such as residential, medical as well as retail.
"A more diverse profile of uses rather than I think what would historically have been a simple, enclosed shopping centre style offer."
He said it was too early to announce a date for redevelopment.
