It will be financed jointly by the health ministry and the University of French Polynesia to help develop policies aimed at preventing the use of the banned drug and to care for addicts.

The highly addictive drug has become a serious challenge, fuelling crime and disrupting society.

The study aims to learn more about the context of the spread of methamphetamine by talking to families hit by the scourge.

The drug has in the main been smuggled into Tahiti from the United States but at the beginning of this year the territory's first methamphetamine lab was discovered.
