Police said the incident unfolded at about 1.40pm this afternoon.

Video posted on social media showed the bus was driven south in the inside northbound lane of the motorway past a steady stream of oncoming traffic forced to merge out of its way.

It passes the Glenside and Johnsonville on ramps, and at times outstrips the speed of traffic travelling in the actual southbound lanes.

Oncoming vehicles tooted in attempts to signal the driver, but were unable to get them to stop or slow down.

Metlink general manager Scott Gallacher said the bus wasn't in service and there were no passengers on board.

No one was hurt, but the driver is being given medical attention, he said.

Gallacher said the matter will be investigated by the police, and the company would also conduct a review.
