Sean Buis, who was 28, died on Eglinton Road in the suburb of Mornington after being struck by a car on 21 July.

Detective senior sergeant Nik Leigh said police recovered a 2003 red Ford Falcon which had damage consistent with being involved in a crash.

Police were confident forensic testing would confirm it was the vehicle involved, Leigh said.

They also recovered "a number of items of interest", he said.

The investigation found that an incident initially occurred at the Unity Park lookout, causing Buis to move towards Eglinton Road where he was struck by the vehicle, he said.

The vehicle then left the scene.

Police serious crash analysts have examined the scene and are now working to reconstruct what happened.

Leigh said police would like to hear from any members of the community who knew what had happened.

"We are also urging the driver of the vehicle to come forward to give their account of what happened."

Police are asking anyone with information to call them on 105, quoting the file number 220722/8806, or via Crime Stoppers.
