The Public Accounts Committee in Fiji held its first meeting in parliament this morning after a two week impasse.

It was originally deferred when government MPs complained about comments the proposed chairperson, Dr Biman Prasad, made about recently released auditor general's reports.

Under the constitution the committee is the only parliamentary committee chaired by an opposition MP and according to the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation the issue of the chairmanship spilled onto the agenda today.

Government members moved a motion nominating Aseri Radrodro as chairman but he declined.

They then called for a vote on the chairmanship on the advice of the Secretary General to Parliament, and Biman Prasad was instated as chair.

The committee will reconvene in mid December when it will start scrutinising the auditor general's reports.
