A body has been recovered from the Waimakariri River in Canterbury after a week-long search for a missing teenager.
Last Wednesday an 18-year old man jumped into the river and failed to resurface.
An extensive land and air search has taken place along the river since. and the body was discovered by a member of the public yesterday at 3.30pm.
Police, rescue helicopters, coastguard and surf lifesaving had been involved in the week-long search.
Police said formal identification was yet to take place but it was believed to be the missing swimmer.
"Police's thoughts and sympathies go out to his family, who have requested privacy at this difficult time. Police would like to thank everyone who assisted with the search since he went missing."
The death has been referred to the coroner.
