Police say the man they believe is responsible for the death of a woman in her Wellington home has already left the country and died overseas.

A homicide investigation was launched after the body of the 62-year-old was found in her Miramar home on 16 October by a friend, who was concerned for her welfare.

Police said they believed the male suspect was known to her, and left the country on 15 October. He has since died in Hong Kong, and local police there were investigating the circumstances.

The woman, Irene Katsougiannis, was named today and a post-mortem has been completed.

People known to her and those in the community have also paid tribute.

Police said the investigation into what happened was progressing well, and the scene examination was expected to be completed by the weekend.

They will report their findings to the Coroner.
